Another new wind farm proposed for the Borders

7 Mar 2025

A new large-scale wind farm consisting of 48 turbines which will be 200 metres high (twice the height of Big Ben) has been proposed in Upper Liddesdale.

Plans are at a very early stage. The potential development is located on the original Cliffhope site and scoping for the wind farm, Saughtree, is expected to commence in April.

Renewable energy company Invenergy is behind this, and it is expected that they will conduct their first round of community engagement from April to June this year. Following that, the feedback will be reviewed and updated designs are expected around August/September.

The final application will then be filed around October time, although this is subject to change.

The grid connection proposed will be to the new Teviot substation on a new grid line, so it is believed that connection would be from 2033 onwards.

The full site boundary is not yet available, but the land is owned mostly by Gresham Funds. Access to be confirmed too.

More details to emerge shortly and early engagement is underway.

In Teviot and Liddesdale alone, this makes 221 turbines currently at various stages of the planning system. Clearly, the Borders continues to be a ‘hotspot’ for wind farm developers.
